Increasing salt isn't for everyone

IMPORTANT: Before taking salt, it is important to know if you have low blood pressure or high blood pressure. Do not take sodium if your Na (sodium) level is normal or if you have elevated blood pressure. It is also a very affordable (and part of most routine blood labs) to have your electrolytes checked.

The recommendation to increase salt intake only applies to EDS/POTS patients whose blood pressure typically runs low. Meaning, if your top number (the bigger number, also called “the systolic pressure”) falls below 110. For now, ignore the bottom number. If your systolic pressure averages below 100, this becomes especially important. If you have normal or high blood pressure, do not follow this rule.

Vitassium Salt Stick is one of the preferred brands for electrolyte correction (Amazon, take 1–2/day).

Alternatively, you can just add a pinch of pink Himalayan salt to your drinking water three times per day. We advise our patients to take about one teaspoon (5 grams) per day over the course of the whole day.
